What do you all use to clean your helmet?

Just warm water and a soft cloth...hubby does my visor for me cause it's a pain to get off. Runs it under warm water, I use lens wipes that I got from my eye doctor between shield cleanings.

I do same as Kittswife - warm water and soft cloth. I use windex for my visor - damn bugs are horrible!

Windex is not a good chemical to use on your visor.

Just warm water and a soft towel (microfiber is better).

I use Plexus and a microfiber towel.

This is true...don't use windex on it! Just warm water and a cloth!

Plexus is king for helmets. The bike get the Mr Clean carwash and then the plastic gets Plexus as well.

Kittswife and blewbayou - thanks, I didn't know windex isn't good for my visor. Appreciate it! Haven't received my new helmet through UPS yet, :( but at least I haven't used windex on it! :)

How is windex harmful?

I have been told by the dealership not to use Windex that has ammonia. So we use Windex without ammonia. We also use it on our bikes too. By the way, what is Plexus?

Plexus is plastic cleaner basically....I've used windex on my entire helmet for several years and never had any issues.

outside of lid i use a wet paper towel on it for a few minutes to soften up the bug goo, then i wipe it off. Then HONDA POLISH! The inside, I shampoo my hair, put my lid on and squish it around, then rinse and let it air dry over the A/C vents

Use it on everything!! The fairings, your windscreen, your helmet, wheels...heck bathe in it...The stuff is absolutely awesome! It'll clean anything!

Oh and someone else mentioned the Honda polish, that stuff is a really good chain cleaner if anyone is interested.

I have used squeegie and windshield washer mix from the gas station. Have also used windex.... neither with any issues.

Discovered plexus plastic cleaner earlier this summer and it rocks.

I use lens wipes. I work for Sams Club and we have the most awesome first aid kit. It has everything, including a huge box of lens wipes so I get them for free. =D

Dealer told me that the ammonia in Windex will discolor/cloud the plastic of your visor. Have always heard it will do the same on tinted windows.

Hmm...I wonder...do you think anyone's ever tried the dishwasher. :duh:

I'm sure someone has
Not me that is the one thing I spared no expense and will take care of it.

I used to know someone who washed computer keyboards in the dishwasher so I'm sure it's been done. lol. I'm pretty sure the heat would be really bad for it though. They say not to leave your helmet out in the sun because the heat is bad and I know my dishwasher gets really hot inside.

BASIC PRE-CLEANING STEP ONE

1) Warm water
2) Mild dish soap only ( as per instruction manual )Duhh! Read it people.
3.) You can pick up a new microfibre that is for tv, video, cameras lenses as well as windows, if you cant find those a good quality micro fibre cloth will do.

[U]BASIC AFTER CARE

Plexus- I personally dont care for the product, it leaves a small haze.

I use NOVUS 1 (plastic clean & shine ), reasons I like;
*NOTE* Still use a good quality microfibre cloth or eyeglass lense cloth and even still a good used tea towel that has gone through about 400 cycles in the wash machine that is made from terry cloth
a) cheaper than the above mentioned 8 fl.oz for $4.69 CND
b) the de-fogging is great, safe for your prescription glasses
c) excellent for repelling dust and debis
d) doesnt leave a haze
e) not an aerosal, its a pump and a little goes a long way.

Your can easily pick it up at any HD retailer anywhere. the above mentioned price of $4.69 was from a HD retailer_ shocking I know!!

I highly recommend it, been using it for a year now, ( I used to use Plexus)

You will thank me if you have used it on a rain day (No Fogging).

The dont's _ NO AMMONIA( Windex) NO HARSH CHEMICALS !!!! NO hard cloths like Terry Cloths, old shirts including t shirt material.

I have just been using hand sanitizer to clean the face shield free of bugs. It works great and doesnt leave any streaks since it dries and evaporates super quick. Ive never used any type of special cleaner and mine doesnt fog up it might have some kind of coating over it i dont know about. But what Doom just said ^^ sounds like it would work and it seems like he knows what he is doing. So if you want a rea good cleaning and protection of your helmet do what Doom said ^^. but i dont ever do that i just clean it up real quick cause the bugs around here are crazy and the hand sanitzer works great.

Again strong chemical, if you want something for the go, if necessary a good quality eye glass cleaner that is safe for plastic lenses and a good quality eye glasses cloth. There are one's that are a mix of diluted alcohol and solution there cheap and good for the on the road trips.

Nothing beats good old warm water, dishsoap and most of all, a good quality microfiber cloth that is just for cleaning the lense to get your lense clean.

Long term preventative maintance and care will win everytime.

NOTE* Hand sanitizers can be anywhere from 62% - 80% rubbing alcohol still to high, go on-line of your manufacture and get thier maintance guidelines.

Depends on where I'm at! At home or if I have access we use Plexus and a microfiber towel.

If I stop on a long ride I use warm water and a papertowel :)

I have to clean the inside! My pads aren't removeable and with the summer weather it gets pretty gruesome in there! Any good advice? I might try what Kittah said...I just don't want it to get mildew-y!

what kind of helmet you got?? mot newer ones have removable liners or at least cheek pads. Most also have that micro anti-bacterial shyt too. So I would think mildew would be a problem. The smell on the other hand  Some frebreeze or wiping off the inside with a warm damp cloth then let air dry should work too.

Suomy...no removable liner...I HATE my helmet (except for my pigtails that is)

Not much of a smell really...just like my hair which isn't bad. I just know I have had some sweaty days and don't want it to be gross...although I haven't broken out because of it or anything.

I don't want to use fabreeze for that very reason. I did just use rubbing alcohol last week.

Try this product, I use it . Heres a quick link to the products
I hope this helps answer your question. This manufacture also has a product for freshening yor helmet as well http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?Item=HFRESH

A seperate helmet liner I recommend, the attached link has one for you to see as well. You have protect your hair dooo! lol

the helmet liner that is on the webpage does work well and does reduce helmet hair quite well. just dont put it in the drier, let it air dry only so it keeps it shape.
