:wallbash:
I'm hoping someone out there has experienced the same and has some suggestions. The problem: I simply want to change out the stock grips on my '07 Ninja 500. Got some nice gel grips, should be no problem, right? WRONG!!! One of the cheap white metal screws won't come out, it's stripped. Spent the money on one of those 'Screw-Out' kits, it just keeps boring a bigger hole into the metal! If I drill any more it's going to strip the inner threads. Why is something that's supposed to be so simple so f'n difficult? Does anyone have any suggestions, I hate to take it to my mechanic for something so trivial!
Ride on,
Bec

umm just what are you unscrewing? Should be able to use a ice pick or something similar to get the grips off. Then clean the the area good n the new grips shoulda came with some grip glue type stuff. Then you just twist, push, pull, and grunt to get the new ones on. :good:

Like playful said you should be able to get them off, I know when we've put new grips on just clean the area really well once you get the old ones off, some of our racers will spray hairspay on the inside of thier new grips and they should go on with just s few tugs and pulls and the hairspray is a good adhesive too.

just go on an drill it the rest of the way. it doesnt matter if its stripped. all you have to do is retap it with a tapping bit, its easy. just get the size you need drill it out, then tap the new size in. then you have a new hole to put the new screw in. that is simple just make it stright. hope it helps

The bar-end screws. I have to take off the bar-end to get the grip off. I got one screw out, but not the other.

If you're still having trouble getting that screw out, there are a few ways to do it. There are things called "easy outs," but they are sort of like an oxy-moron. If they break, you can't drill on them and then you're almost screwed! I did break one trying to get my bar end off. Still haven't gotten off, but I know a few ways to get it off. If you know someone with a welder, you can cut the bolt off and then take a bolt and carefully weld it to the cut screw. You can then use the bolt thats welded to the screw to 'screw' the screw out (wow, that's way too many screws in a row).

:dunno: I have long fingers for a shorty...someone recommended I change my stock grips to help with my hands from aching on longer rides. Will this help?

You could possibly go with Gel grips, but one thing you're probably doing is putting most of your weight on your hands which is a NO NO! You should be squeezing the tank with your legs/knees with the balls of your toes on your footpegs for support and not your hands. I know for longer rides, it's hard to do, so a set of nice gel grips would be good too! And heavier Bar Ends would help decrease the vibrations seen on the clip-ons/handelbars. Hope this helps.

For me, that many "screw"s in a row with the word like 'nuts' in the same sentance is a little wrong. Now if it was said differently... that's a different story.

Thanks...I do squeeze tank as a newbie I have felt it the next day on the longer rides. But, I'll consider changing grips this winter.

If you plan on riding during the winter, you might also consider getting some heated grips. I know I need some!
