I would certainly plan on it unless something conflicted as far as dates. Knowing the dates in advance will help so I can be there the whole time next year. I wasn't able to stay the whole time this year. (because I just found this site right before the rally)

Deal's Gap, NC/TN. We stayed at Fonatna Village Resort. Raised lots of money for breast cancer this year and soon there should be a poll posted on which charity we'll work toward next year along with dates, etc.

You should really come. It was a great time; amazing to see sooo many people who have never met come together and get along like one big happy family!:sbgurl:

It cost us $1200 in gas to trailer the bikes out there, not to mention the 6+ Tanks of gas that I put in at $5/gal (because they rape you with fuel costs up there) $360 for the room, plus food and schwag for the family. And I had to buy $600 worth of tires for two bikes, so it was a pretty expensive trip.

Not sure if I can save up to do it again next year, but I will try.

Where were you paying $5 per gal at? I never paid over $4gal. And yes I run premium in the bike.

I dont think is was really cheap for anyone tho. We all just need to start saving up for it now is all :good: :drinks:

We always filled up down at the Solo in Robbinsville! Screw the Gap's prices for gas and the Hellbender PitStop was like $5 for a 1/2 gallon!

It cost us about $2000 plus the sponsorship so $3000 approximately. But we got to do it as a business expense

We'll be there again though! Got a year to work on my riding so I can really ride the Dragon!!!

We got it started Monday night with our styrofoam cooler of beer. You should have seen us getting it earlier that evening. We took my SV. Mike drove with me on the back. I was holding that cooler loaded down with ice, a 12 pack of beer, and a couple of munchy things in it IN MY LAP! Worse yet, it was right after that really bad downpour.

I'm worried that I'm too new of a rider...can anyone tell me how it is? I mean, I've ridden to Canada and I ride around town, I've put about 3k miles on my bike in the past 3 months...I mean, if you've ever looked at a map of the Pittsburgh area, it looks like a pile of spaghetti, but I've never done any serious riding with really sharp curves and stuff...how fast do you guys go and do you think it would be a good idea for me to even attempt this in my second year of riding?

rcrgirl84
10-02-2008, 11:00 AM
There were people this year from all riding backgrounds . . . some brand new to bikes. For the charity ride, we had groups of different riding levels that people were broken up into.

The speed limit on the Dragon itself is only 35 mph, but most times, you won't even be doing that.

As long as you ride your own ride and are not trying to keep up with faster peope, you'll be fine. Just ride your own ride at your own pace, don't worry about anybody else.

People might come up behind you to try and pass you, just ride your own - don't worry about them. If they are good riders, they will find the right time and place to pass you. When you feel comfortable in a little straight away, maybe just move to the outside of the lane or point for them to go ahead.

I live in Florida...capitol of straight flat roads. I had been riding less than a year when I went this year. Everyone will tell you ride your own ride. Don't push to keep up.

They had 3 groups of riding pace. I was in the back group, my husband lead the fast group. We had a group of girls that were all pretty comfortable with their slower pace! Right girls! The Skyway is long sweeping turns that will let you ride a little faster and build your confidence actually.

Road the Dragon pretty much at the speed limit incl turns, switchbacks etc which they post at anywhere from 10-20 mph. Me, Headlight, Rob n Chuck were last down but we did hang out at the top for a while and I was last last down...no big deal. Everyone was still there waiting for me! (oh some of the Chic Riders went swimming and they came down behind us but we were still there!)

I recommend it 1000 times over! Just ride your ride, don't look in your mirrors on turns, don't look off at the beautiful scenery too much, don't feel like you're slowing anyone down. If you get there earlier you can run down the dragon to get use to it a little too. I didn't get to do that before the charity ride.

I don't have the freak-o father to deal with but, generally if we're going to actually take a vacation (which we never do) we don't want the kids to be with us...not much fun for the two of us then....plus with Kaela having to get a job next summer...she will need transportation and all....it'll just get easier when she's just a bit older I guess. While I would absolutely LOVE to meet everyone, it's just not something that is going to easy for us to do right now I think.
