Hey, I'm new to the forums and also riding. I just got myself a Kawasaki Ninja 500r with my father, and we're taking the MSF course together in a month or so. I've been getting myself gear and so far have purchased a textile Jacket with CE armor, and a full face helmet, both by Scorpion. The helmet is Snell and DOT approved. The next piece of equipment I was looking into, and more recently since visiting ride2die.com is a pair of pants. I see a lot of people just riding with denim, but I'm a little skeptical of jeans holding up in a crash. What do you guys usually ride in? The problem with me is the fit - I'm a size 12 usually in pants, and most of the pants I see are very tight fitting. This wouldn't be a problem if I was looking into racing or hardcore riding, but the main use for my bike will be commuting. Wearing tight leathers to school might be a little awkward, so I was looking for pants I could wear on top of my normal pants, though I understand this might be kind of difficult to find and that I might have to resort to changing when I get to school. Any thoughts on pants?

I used to wear leathers to ride in to work and then change when i got there. Joe Rocket makes overpants tho that should work fine.

I just got the Scorpion Haley pants - they fit over whatever I'm wearing rather nicely, because they have easily adjustable lacing all the way up the thighs. :) Their sizing seems rather consistent with jeans sizing, too - I was able to use the sizing chart and pick the right size on the first try.

:wsbg: Glad to hear you're taking the MSF course and you've got a pretty good starter bike too!

Thanks for all your help, I'm really excited to start. Just wanted to make sure I had adequate protection beforehand, I'm really nervous about crashing. Any idea if any of those pants posted are vented as well? Seems like leather gets pretty warm.

leather gets hot when you're not moving, but I rather sweat than bleed

Good call, I guess I wouldn't mind wearing leathers alone but having well vented overpants seems to make sense because you'll have more layers. I guess that's just give and take, and road rash does not look appealing :black eye:

trust me, you get used to be all hot and sweaty. Once you're moving it's no big deal. Just stay out of stop and go city traffic! But in reality, you'd get hot and sweaty even without the riding pants, so just wear them and keep your skin on your body! AND...At 65mph... bugs HURT even thru jeans!

Definitely, jeans in the summer are hot anyway, I guess at that point it's sweaty or sweaty. I'll be mostly commuting, so I'll just have to suck it up. I'm sure once I start I'll figure it all out.

WELCOME TO SBG!!! +1 on taking the MSF. Best to learn correctly the first time than to try and break bad habits you've picked up from someone else.

Joe Rocket makes has textile and mesh overpants for ladies. They're okay, but run a little small. Go one size up from what you think you'll need. newenough.com is a great place to pick them up.

As to jeans, you can get the Draggin' Jeans, Defender Jeans, Icon, A* or some of the other brands that have Kevlar in the butt, hips and knees. Then, you can buy knee and shin armor to go under them. Regular jeans are good for 10'. That's it. Then, it's skin.

Yes, leather is the best. Perfed for summer. But here in Hotlanta, even with perfed leather, I almost wound up with heat stroke the other day. As long as you're moving its okay. It's having to stop in traffic that sucks.

So, how exactly to you recommend dealing with hot, humid southern weather and traffic? I'd prefer to be prepared ahead of time for vacation (spending a few days in Myrtle Beach), and my bf's solution of "ditch the gear" is not one I'm liking much.... :beach: What's a girl to do??? :dntknw:

You will get used to it (the heat), I promise. At first you will be like,"why am I wearing all this stuff ?",but it gets better once you ride a few times with all of it.
You have a great starter bike. I loved my Kawi 500. I kinda miss it sometimes too.

+1 you have to adapt to it since we all have a warped sense of staying cool. Outside in the sun you will actually be hotter naked than completely covers up. Tho I know it doesnt seems like it, but its a proven fact  :drinks:

Thanks all, I ordered a pair of overpants that I hope will do the trick.

They're on backorder now but hopefully they'll fit. I just got my Scorpion EXO-700 Burst helmet in and it fits great, and I have my jacket, now all I need is gloves and pants and I'm set to ride.

I recently bought some Scorpion pants. I love them! You will have to change, but these are nice. I have a hard time fitting any kind of clothes and these fit nicely. They have a low rise which is comfortable on the bike. Some thumbs down: no pockets and the zipper doesn't have a cover, so it rides down a bit. But I think I can fix that with a little effort. Still the best riding pants I've found so far. I'll have to let you know the exact style.

Those scorpion pants looked really hot, I liked the Haley ones. I just wish they made them as overpants, I won't be wearing them for more than 30 minutes at a time usually.

I have the Haley's, and I use them as overpants, too. There's enough adjustment in the thighs that you can get them *just* big enough to slide over office pants or tight jeans, and they'll still work fine with nothing underneath too.
