Great info!!
For those that didn't notice, this information is posted in our FAQ section on the board for easy reference.
Thanks Jon for submitting the info, this is something all of us as riders should know.

I hoping this isn't posted elsewhere, I did a search but didn't find anything.
Another note that might be a good idea to add to the Downed Rider FAQ (especially if the rider is unconscious and you don't know them) is to check their helmet for the MIVS. If you don't know what that is you can check them out at

Basically it's a small self adhesive pouch to hold critical medical information. Cycle Gadgets used to offer them for free, but now they are under $2. I have one on all of my helmets. You never know, it might be what saves your life one day. Especially if you have special medical concerns such as allergies.

another thing that, IMO, is very important to add and should be done immediately is to make sure the bike's ignition is turned OFF. If the bike is easily accessible this can be done very quickly and insures that you will not have the additional excitement of a fireball erupting nearby. Obviously, if you are the only person on scene and the bike is 75 feet away, check on the rider first before going to the bike or direct someone else to do it.

Most of the club I belong has taken the bystanders assistance course which I believe is offered nation wide. If you can get a group together take it, it's VERY informative.

One VERY important thing that most people never think about. Ask if there was a passenger. If the rider is unconscious, or unable to answer have the first able body start a search.

word of advice. if u see motorcycle parts along the side of the road, don't assume it's an old accident. take some time and look around. about 2 years ago, a friend of mine's bf took a turn badly one night and was thrown from the bike. he and the bike landed in a field of tall grass with parts all over the side of the road. the guy lay there paralyzed for 4 hours until another biker saw the parts and decided to pull over and look around. the downed rider was still alive but died at the hospital. after staying alive for 4 hours, i'm assuming he could have been saved if he'd been rescued earlier.
