View Full Version : The Suzuki Syndrome...

Well, I have discovered something that is apparantly common on Carburated Suzukis...So, I am hoping what I share will save someone headaches later one...

So, this is what happened:

Ok, well first, the bike is a '92 Suzuki GS1100G. I changed the plugs on Saturday...#4 was fouled but the other 3 were fine. Ran great...Now, at idle and when the bike is turned off, whisps of white smoke are coming from the #4 carb...not from under the black diaphram cover, but from a "post" just in front of it....

No fuel mixture issues when the plugs were changed..all gapped correctly at .028. None when we rode 2 up to Ruidoso and back. (it was cooler for that trip then) Now all of a sudden, BAM fouled plug (just one) and a smoking carb top (same one as the fouled plug.) It happens when the bike is stopped. It could be gas fumes (fouled plug doesn't cause the gas to burn) finding their way out through the gasket??? Maybe?? He said he had to lower the idle because it was racing at about 17 or 1800 RPM when it was running fine at about 1300. Now the idle is lower but it is also only firing on pistons 1,2,& 3 by the time he got to work...but only on these 3 at idle and lower speeds. One piston short = lowered RPM. Yesterday with the miss, he raised the idle just a little to bring it back up to 1300 from about 900 RPM. If it was going on all 4 it would have stayed at 1300 RPM, correct??

So, I was at a lost. I was thinking that it is a feul mixture problem...carb related...but hubby doesn't think so...Could it be a valve problem which caused the plug to foul in the first place? He rides the bike every day...and hasn't had any problems until that plug fouled last week...And at highway speeds it is fine...

SOLUTION:

Turned out...the bike had the Suzuki syndrome!!! LOL!!! Aparantly, it is commong for the o-rings that fit around the seat to go bad and that is exactly what happened here. I was able to take the bowl off of carb 4 without taking the entire rack out and replace it. Now, i need to find 3 more o-rings for the other 3 carbs as I am sure they are next!!! Unfortunately, that means removing the entire bank of carbs as i can't the bowls off of the the inner carbs like I did the outer...no room!!

Can you belive it...all that problem becasue of one little O-ring??? The gas was just pouring over it and basically flooding the carb!!! WOW!!

Also, due to all the gas dumping into the bowl, it had caused the 0-ring that fits under the vaccum port to erode...thus causing a vacuum leak...

Now, the bike runs like a top again!!

So, hopefully, this will help another rider...

Symptons:

fouling plug
running on 3 cylinders(this bike is an inline 4) under 4k rpms..fine in higher RPMs (bike is able to use up all the fuel that is being dumped into it)
Loss of gas mileage due to the carb just dumping fuel...(unburned gas)

Thanks PG. I tell you...I was at my wits end...I just couldn't figure out what was happening...Leo likes working on his baja, but doesn't like messing with the bikes. As for me, if it's mechanical, let me at it!!! However, I can't seem to keep my house clean and organized worth a sh$%!! That domestic Goddess gene just passed me by!!! LOL!

I thought changing the plugs would fix it..and it did, for just a bit...but then it started again...

So, i went down the list..plugs, spark including spark plug wire(I hate checking spark cuz I always get zapped:eek:)..spark was good and strong..trust me!!! LOL, compression which was good and strong, the sync on the carbs (wish was fine)...then, took the diapram cap off and noticed the vacuum port O-ring was missing...easy fix...replaced it and started her up again...problem still there...so, then, took the diaphram cap back off and took the diapphram out to see how much fuel was getting into the carb (man, it was flooding) so I thought AHA! Float issue...luckilly, on Leo's bike I can get the bowl off the carb without taking the entire bank out. There was a little bit of crap in the bowl, but nothing really unusual, float looked fine..so once again, I was stumped...so, I decided to start her up with the bowl off to see how the fuel was pumping...and wala...out popped the seet!!!

Man, I was starting to pull my hair out...I just couldn't figure it out!
