Hit-run suspect, 41, turns herself in
Cyclist remains in hospital with a broken back
LAKEWOOD - A Denver woman sought as the suspected driver in a hit-and-run that left a 21-year-old motorcyclist with a broken back surrendered to police Wednesday.
Renee Montano, 41, of Denver, turned herself in to Lakewood police about 1 p.m. She was transferred to the custody of the Colorado State Patrol, which is investigating the accident.
The accident occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 40 and U.S. 6 near Golden.
Michelle Zoril, an emergency medical technician for Highlands Rescue, had been riding her Honda CBR motorcycle home after a trip to Estes Park. She was wearing a helmet.
Zoril had stopped for a red light when in her rear-view mirror she saw a 2004 Chrysler Sebring bearing down on her. The car rear-ended the motorcycle and sent Zoril flying.
She remains in serious condition at St. Anthony Central Hospital, where she wears a titanium brace to support her back while she is being treated for a broken vertebra.
State Patrol investigators were able to recover a major piece of evidence at the scene: a Colorado license plate that enabled them to determine the names of the two owners of the Sebring.
State Patrol spokesman said that media reports on the accident generated calls from the public. He credited the calls and the publicity with Montano's decision to surrender.
"It was a matter of time before she was tracked down," Sullivan said.
Montano will be held at the Jefferson County Jail on investigation of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury, a felony, and careless driving, a misdemeanor.
