View Full Version : My next bike: 600SS... but what?
DJ Nathan V
04-14-2008, 04:45 PM
Soon (soon being relative to money....) I'm going to upgrade to a 600SS on the street, which will be a track bike once it's paid off.
I find the Honda uninspiring to look at and offset sliders or cutting the fairings for sliders doesn't appeal to me. The CBR is out.
I like the Yami a lot technically and aesthetically, especially since it'll rock on the track once I move it off the street.
Didn't care that much about the Kawi until I rode one this week. Liked it a lot. Smooth powerband.... How are they on the track though?
Everyone in Seattle has a damn GSXR... but they still look good. Seems like they do well on the track, too. ... but EVERYONE has one. Not as quick as the Yami's on the track either.
I need to ride the Yami and the GSXR still, for sure. I'll probably get to ride an R1 in the next month but that won't tell me much about the R6.
Thoughts? If you have an 06-08 model of these why did you choose it and what do you like/dislike on it?
These are the ones I'm looking at: (the colors even)

The 2008s are SO BORING though. I might consider an 07 if I can get one in white.... but I still don't like the fact that that you have to offset the frame sliders. I also consider undertail exhaust to be a negative.

I have a friend who has one prepared for the track. I've not ridden one yet, but this guy (who has raced in the past) has done nothing but rave about how well it handles.
I couldn't tell you if it breaks any rules. I would think that it being a 3 cylinder was enough of a handicap to make up for the extra 75cc. The 636 is still race eligible isn't it? And it's a 4 cylinder....

Depends on the group you're racing with I think.
3. Supersport classes will be:
a. 600 Supersport
I. up to 600cc four-stroke multi-cylinder
II. up to 675cc four-stroke three cylinder
III. up to 750cc four-stroke twins
Guess that fits for WMRRA! Looking up pricing now...

Funny how they rarely get better than 6th place in any WSBK standings... No 1sts this year yet, and always behind a GSXR1000 or an R1. :nee: Overall listed 4th after the 1098, GSXR, and R1.

Yeah, that's not bad. But you could probably get a better deal on an '07 right now, in any brand. Have you called any dealers or are you just looking at MSRP?

MSRP right now because I'm still some amount of $$ away. Crunching down the loan on the 500 and once it hits ~ trade in value that bike is gone. Once I'm within a few weeks of purchase I'll be calling people and looking at inventories.

Actually, I like the cleaner LOOK... and the sound is sweet with the intake in front of you and the exhaust right behind.... but it's a neg on performance and I have just never been a real fan of it. I think Yamaha and Buell have the best ideas on the exhaust.... short and/or out of the way.

Gotta go with the Honda RR here.....the suspension, undertail exhaust, and overall fit and finish of the whole bike were the selling points for me. Different strokes for different folks....I love the undertail, makes the bike look even and balanced out IMO.
Nathan, forget about which one is better on the track... really. :big_boss:
All of the current 600s are competitive on the track. The only reason that the Yamaha's are doing better at the local circuit is due to the rider. When it comes right down to it, rider comfort is what matters. If you aren't comfortable on the bike, then you'll never get fast on the track.
Take your time, and sit on every bike you find. Stay there for 10-15 minutes. How does it feel? Now, think about sliding from cheek to cheek, one side of the bike to the other. Does the stock seat, tank, and tail get in your way? Remember that all of those must remain stock to race in WMRRA SuperSport.
Pegs and handlebars can be adjusted to an extent, but you'll still want to consider the overall seat-to-bars and seat-to-pegs size of the cockpit. There's not much difference among the big four, but you could probably find a reasonably priced 749 if you need something larger. My guess is that you'll be fine with the Japanese imports.
Finally, if you still think that you need the best in performance, over all else, then I leave you one thing to consider. By the time that you get fast enough for the minor performance differences amonst the big-four to matter, a current model bike will be out of contingency.
Best of luck! :drinks:

Contingency isn't a worry...
Whatever I get will be streeted for at LEAST a full season unless I suddenly start making a lot more money.
Good points though, for sure. So far, the best feeling bike is the R6. I sat on it for probably 20 mins at the shop one day while they were figuring out my loan options for picking it up and how much I could get for the 500. Love how the curve of the tank feels.
... Love how the curve of the tank feels.
See, it's the exact opposite for me! Unless I've got my leather pants on, that curve wants to damage the merchandise. I need the flatter tank from the GSXR for street riding. :dirol:

OR has no sales tax, but WA makes you pay WA tax when you register it for plates if you buy elsewhere without paying tax. Got ****ed for about $1k when I bought my car in OR.

Congrats on the buy man, I have an 07 in Red and LOVE it. Someone asked what your mods list was, having installed quite a few of the following I would suggest in order:
1. Frame sliders. LSL is my choice, trick look and I haven't seen anyone else with them.
2. Under tail. Comp Werkz was my choice, nice and clean and easy to install.
3. Flush mount front signals. I went with Protons and love them super bright even during the day, installed easy and fit great. If give the choice again I may have spent a little more and gone for the more custom looking ones from Watsen Designs.
http://www.hightechspeed.com/product...ghts/index.asp http://www.watsendesign.com/Yamaha_Products/06R6/06_R6.htm
4. -1/+2 sprocket conversion with a 520 pitch. The low end is sooooo bad on this bike. Once the RPMs are up no issues, but I hate even allowing the guy at the light the satisfaction of pulling a foot in front of me. Will help a lot in the corners as well.
5. Stearing stabilizer. I got the GPR V4 in red and black and really like thought of not getting the death shakes. Also at speed it's nice to crank it up some to give a more stable feel.
6. Exhaust. Personal preferance here, Termi is AMAZING but extremely ugly in my opinion. Haven't gotten it yet but I'm seriaously looking into the laser x-treme. http://www.laserexhausts.com/en/module/CATALOGUE_BIKES/bike-exhausts.html
Haven't seen anyone with it and the specs, sound, and looks are great.
Not that you asked for any of it, but hopefully it helps you.

Good to know. :)
