After disastrous start of the season, Nicky Hayden started coming into better form in second part of the season, confirming that improved form in Estoril today by taking his first pole position of the season in which he supposed to defend his last year's title. Hayden edged Casey Stoner in last minutes of the session, setting time that was only 0.04 seconds better than one set by Stoner, so championship leader had to settle in second place. Valentino Rossi, who looks determined to make things hard for Stoner in remainder of the season, managed to take last place in first row, 0.275 seconds behind Hayden.
