I used to use the whatever they sold at the local motorcycle shop - believe it was like spectro or something and I have used Valvoline in everything I owned at one point or another.. but awhile ago I switched to Amsoil and I think it made a huge difference.. ran it in my car and changed the oil every 12,500 miles - started better, ran better and got better gas mileage.. so really didn't cost me anymore than regular oil.. running amsoil in my R6 and when I switched over it started and ran so much better i couldn't believe it.. right now my lease car though i just put in the cheapest oil i can find because i am turning it back in.. my expedition that i own honestly i have been too busy, lazy and its been cold out there so i had it changed at the local 30 minute place and they put in valvoline.. once the weather breaks i am putting amsoil in it.. just wondering what everyone else is using and your thoughts.. i know Twisty was a big proponent of Amsoil and a reason I decided to try it.. happy i did.. i believe he was being sponsored by silkolene and said it was great oil but it was super expensive..

Yep, Amsoil's great, thats what I run in my bike. Choice of the 2 without price factor Twisty says (from bed as he's sick now, but with the chest flu, not stomach flu I had) Silkolene is his #1 pick, pricey, but 110% best.

I used to use Valvoline 30 in the old 78 Honda. It ran great and it was what the book said to use. I never tried the synthetic since I sold the bike before I could try it. I haven't changed the oil in the Suzuki yet. I changed the oil in a couple of my friends bikes (the non mechanicaly inclined guys) and they went for Castrol synthetic since that was what was suggested at the parts counter. From what I gather here, the Amsoil is the way to go as aposed to the conventional stuff. I still use Valvoline Race 40 weight in my Baja but that is also since that thing gets new oil every 3 months regardless of the milage.

Right now i'm not picky about the oil, I have a care plan with the Yami dealer and they do all my maintenance free of charge. So I go with what they put in there.

As soon as that warranty expires I'll be looking for recommendations :good:

I use synthetic in any bike I'm really going to abuse like a race bike or my dirt bikes. I haven't found the need to use it on my regular street bikes. I highly recommend NOT using it on old bikes. Strangely enough that leads to leaks.

I change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and occasionally have it sent off to be tested. So far, no problems have been reported.

So I'll keep on using whatever oil my local shop carries and recommends at that point in time.

I use Castrol Actevo, but am considering a switch to Shell Rotella with the next change. Have been a faithful Castrol user for years, both with my autos and bikes, but lots of folks I know really like the Rotella.

i think amsoil is about $8 a quart but if you quantity buy you can get it for about $6 a quart.. worth every ****ing penny if you ask me.. tried alot of different oils and the bike by far runs better with amsoil.. cars do too..

funny thing about yamaha how they make a weight of oil that no one else makes to scam the yamaha customers into only buying their oil.. don't buy into that shit.. its a total rip off and shitty oil.. i tried some in my r6 when i first got it and it never ran worse..

pg i am about to buy some amsoil so i will post up what i pay for it.. i need to get some for the truck as well..

can't go wrong with amsoil for the bike, truck or car.. or any engine for that matter.. i couldn't believe how much better my r6 and my car ran on it.. my expedition is next to get the engine flush {if you are going to make the switch ALWAYS ALWAYS for optimum benefit flush the engine first - its less than $10 and well worth it} and amsoil treatment..

i am seriously considering getting a rare earth element filter for the r6.. its like $119 but its washable and better flow.. anyone ever try one of those? saw it in cycle world this month..

I use Repsol Oil ive used Valvoline and Castrol but i wasnt impressed and even changed the oil early cause i didnt trust it. But this Repsol oil is wonderful. It was 8.95 a qt (my bike uses 2 qt) kind of expensive but when you ride as much as i do it needs to be good. Hell my bike is my primary means of transport so im putting a few "K" on it every month ill have 20K by the rally next year im sure of it. Its got 11,885 right now. I recommend using Repsol.

I've heard you don't have to do changes as often with synthetic oil. Is that true? I'm going to be doing my first oil change on my bike in a couple thousand miles so I'm curious. (The dealer was doing it before.) I wasn't so good at keeping up with changes on my car cuz it was so difficult to do. I want to be really good with the maintenance on my bike.

that is an incorrect statement fabricated by the oil companies.. actually i used amsoil in my car and changed it every 12,500 and drove 200,000 miles, sold the car 4 years ago and it is still running today like the day it was born.. so don't listen to the 3,000 mile change crap - if you don't believe me go to www.amsoil.com

i now use 25,000 mile oil in my expedition and it runs great and i get better gas mileage - less $, less gas and less changes..

my bike i go 5,000 miles or more including track days and it runs perfect on amsoil.. changing more often is a waste of money..

if you are really that worried about it then just buy an extra quart and extra oil filter - after 8,000 miles on the car just change the filter and add a fresh quart.. same with bike but 4,000 street miles change the filter and get easy 8,000 miles out of every oil change..

you can ask anyone that knows anything about oil and they will tell you the filter is far more important than the oil and if you use synthetic it breaks down far longer than conventional shit oil..

Heres a comment from one of Busanation members about ROYAL PURPLE.

I have had very bad results in the past with royal purple major comsumption problems and a few camshaft surface failures. I had a customer back in 05 with a 2005 mustang gt that i turbocharged as soon as he got the car from me he he called me stating that the car was smoking really bad. He was very un happy that he was having this problem and said he only got to drive it to a friend's house to change the oil !!!!! Having had problems in the past I said you didn't use royal purple did you??? His eye's got real big and said how did you know.As soon as the royal purple was removed the car was back to normal.

I also have another friend with the same results he has a 5 car drift team that was given 20 cases of royal purple and they had to take it back out the same weekend they put it in due to it smoking like a freight train.

This is what i got from use of royal purple please feel free to test it some more then please tell me what you come up with.

if you aren't tripling their "recommendations" you are wasting your money - stop it - or instead of changing your oil "pretend" you did, send me the oil change money and i will go and blow it on cheap beer and gambling.. or i can take your oil change money and sell you swamp land up here in michigan - it's a great deal in a "developing" area..

ams oil states you can go 10,000 miles or up to a yr (whicjh ever comes 1st) when using their oil and their filter.

ams oil/ams oil filter---cage, i go 10,000 miles between oil changes with ams oil full synthetic and using their (ams oil) oil filter. this is per ams oil.

ams oil/oem filter--street bike, i change it about every 4000 miles (never past 4000 miles)

So using synthetic I can go 9k on a oil change??

yes

and new amsoil for the cage - 0W20 is guaranteed for 25,000 miles - look it up. great oil well worth the money. my expedition is running top notch and i get 20% better gas mileage - that really helps with a gas guzzling 5,564 lb vehicle..

do what you want say what you want believe what you want.. i don't care.. i don't work for an oil company.. i get no money from oil companies.. i just know i have owned over 30 vehicles including cars, trucks and motorcycles.. i have tried every oil at there.. i used to change it every 3,000 like an idiot.. i was anti-synthetic that is a waste of money for years and only used valvoline even in my bike - that is until someone talked me into trying amsoil.. yes there is better oil out there like silkolene but dollar for dollar best value is amsoil and unless you are racing and have a sponsor i wouldn't recommend silkolene unless you just have too much damn money because it is very expensive..

here is a little riddle for you batman - i had a 1980 datsun b1000.. the seals were shot - couldn't change the oil because it would all leak out.. so i just added oil every week or so - valvoline.. drove that truck to 463,000 miles with no rebuild.. so you tell me that you need to change your oil every 3,000..

my good friend has a 2000 silverado with 180,000 miles - he has changed the oil 6 times.. 3,000 miles sounding like a scam yet?

i could give you a million examples of better mileage, better performance, less money and less time and hassle changing oil but i think you get the picture.. don't listen to the oil companies - they of course want you to change your oil every 3,000 because it is SURVEY SAYS more money in their pockets.. if you notice now cars owners manuals are recommending every 5,000 or 7,500 or they have an oil life light.. that is from pressure from the consumer raising questions about every 3,000 miles, etc.

Mudpuppy
10-23-2008, 09:59 AM
amsoil makes a great filter as well - do yourself a favor and buy an extra quart of amsoil in case it gets low - check early and check often - especially when you change at longer intervals you still need to keep the oil level full.. that is a given no matter how often you change oil - most important thing is to keep oil in any engine.. my friend super found that out the hard way on sunday at grattan when his sv engine seized..

yes - he had a BAD BAD BAD day. First session I am kind of taking it easy for first 2-3 laps.. so around lap 4 i start laying into a bit and pass a slower bike. i come around 1 flying and 2 i slow up just a bit because my line was jacked up (that's another story) - so I am in turn 3 and out of the corner of my eye i see super going down the pit out then his bike shakes violently side to side and he falls over at like 5mph - seriously i thought he was having a seizure or something - i thought super is the last guy i would see crash at low speeds let alone crash.. i was so tempted to pull off but i was going too fast and because i blew turn 2 i wasn't sure how close the guy i passed in turn 9 was to me and i didn't want to cause a wreck.. so i hauled ass around the track and when i got back to the pit out i came off and there was a guy helping super get his bike out of the way and he violently waved me by as if don't even think about stopping.. so then i went back on the track and came around again.. this time super was behind the guard rail so i could stop and talk to him - his front brake locked up.. so he got that fixed promptly.. then after lunch second session i come flying around turn 1 and there he is again with his hand up going into turn 2 about 15mph or something.. so when i come in after the session he says i think i lost a cylinder - one of the instructors says no way because if you did your engine would seize - check your oil.. sure enough it was like 1-1/2 quarts low.. so i gave him some oil but even then when he started it the bike sounded better but it had a tinny clink when you slightly rev'd it.. he let it sit for awhile and tried again.. still doing it.. third time it seized up during idle.. so this winter he has some work to do for sure - the lesson is ALWAYS check your oil and IMHO - ALWAYS use Amsoil or equivalent - with Amsoil I don't believe that would happen - they have done tests for like 5,000 after using amsoil with no oil and the engine was fine.. he was using spectro or whatever other crap oil they sell at stealerships (waste of money oil is what i call it - same price as amsoil or more but shitty oil)..
