My Dad has been sportbikes for years. He has a 04 Suzuki GS500f in his stable that runs great. He told me it would be a good first bike to start off with.:butbutbut: I was wondering what all of you think?

PS : I currently go to college in Denver, Co. , but live in Arkansas. So the riding is great in both places.

the GS500 would be a great bike to start on. I recommended it to one of my friends that was looking at getting a bike just a few months ago. Just take it slow and if you need anyone to ride with in Colorado, I would be happy to accompany you.

it's an outstanding first bike... but remember even a 250 can bite ya in the butt if you disrespect it...

if you haven't already hit up the MSF course... it'll teach ya about throttle control and clutch control. as well as how to maneuver the bike at low speeds as well as highway speeds.

good luck!

I'll be riding in Colorado in 395 days and counting... I can't freak'n wait!

I love my GS500. Very stable and forgiving. Still can be pushed through the corners at a pretty good clip without too much trouble.

Denver huh? BUY MY 600!!!! lol

the 500 is a great bike to start off on, no doubt! i started off on a 98 FZR 600 because at the time, i couldn't find any 500's in the price range i was willing to spend and then found the FZR. Otherwise, i would have started off with a 500.

definitey ride at your own pace, take the msf course, all that good stuff, and then when YOU are ready to move up, if you even want to move up.. then buy my bike! :D

The GS500F is the bike I'm going to be starting out with. So I would say go for it.

I have an older one as you can see without a fairing. It's a blast. I've done a couple of things to it. I dropped the front sprocket one and now bullets nicely off the line. It's great if you have fun twisty roads because it's so light you have great control with it. I am happy that my hubby got this for my first bike. It's been a year and I'm still learning what that bike can do. When i can do what hubby does with it, then I'll know I've learned quite a bit! Oh and I totally agree with Suki.. take the course! It's great!

Perfect choice for a first bike. But yes, respect the bike always..no matter how big or small it is it can still bite you. CONGRATS and welcome to the addiction!!

It's a great bike. After All, two wheels is two wheels. Don't worry about being able to keep up..the only person you need to compete against is yourself.

Just to stress what many have already said - find the local MSF class and take it - it could save your skin - it saved mine when I started out.
