O.k. then. That's the formalities out of the way, now onto the important stuff.

Lesson number one.
(actually there is only one lesson)

As a rule, Australians don't ever, under any circumstances, never ever, take ourselves seriously, ever.

Serious things happen for sure, and we'll give them the amount of attention they deserve. We'll even act serious while we do it sometimes, but we wont take ourselves seriously. And when the serious thing is over, we'll make jokes out of it. It's called pulling the piss.

Lesson number one part b. (no this is not a seperate rule)

If someone takes themselves seriously, we'll pull the piss out of them. The more serious they take themselves, the harder they cop it. Sometimes it's misrepresented as being 'the tall poppy syndrome'. But no such thing exists in our country. If we get a sense that somebody has taken a fancy to themselves, we simply want to knock them down a peg or two. There's a bit of a history to it, i might get a chance to go into it down the track.

Anyway, let me give you an example. This wally....

...was a national icon. he helped forge part of Australia's culture and identity. And he did it all by making a joke out of everything. Himself, ourselves, and everything else. He was good at it, hell his whole career started as a joke, he was bloody funny. Still can be too when he's not trying, and that's the key, he's a try hard.

Great film that was loved over here, and seemed to make sense to you guys over there. It was one of the few break through films from our country that we weren't embarrassed about. Made Hoges a healthy sum of cash, and as a bonus, he hooked up with a hottie....

...he gets a facelift. Which by itself is no biggy. In an ideal world, we'd hang shit on him, he'd let us, we would all laugh about it and move on.
But he held firm to his story that he never got one, which makes him a bullshitter. Worse than that, it's pretty obvious to everyone except him that he's bullshitting, so he thinks we're a little dopey and we wont notice.
To sum the whole thing up. He started out as one of the boys, and ended up thinking he is better than us. Takes himself too seriously, so none of us do. Clear as mud?
