long story short- boyfriend went down on my bike a month and a half ago, i rode it for the first time yesterday... (07 ZZR600)
when i parked it i heard a light popping sound coming from the exhaust. it happens about every 45 seconds consistently and you can only hear it if you listen hard. boyfriend is stumped and so am i.. he said he'll take it in but i was wondering if anyone here had any idea what it could be.

Probably bent the exhaust some where and have a leak.

Makes noise with engine running or engine shut off? If off ... is it like a little metallic "tink" type of popping noise??

its after i turn the bike off. i was talking to my friend the other day and he said it might be that the bike is getting too hot, which makes the exhaust too hot. and that the noise might be the metal coming together as it cools down.. does that sound like a possibility?

It is fairly typical for an exhaust system, be it on a bike or car or whatever, to make little metallic popping or tinking noises as it cools down. I believe it has to do with the expansion and contraction of the metal is it goes thru heating and cooling cycles. If you are only hearing this new and fascinating noise when the bike is shut off, I would not be overly concerned about it. You probably did not take notice of it before is all.
Besides that, there really isn't much that could make a noise in your exhaust after shutting down the bike that would not also cause pretty obvious other problems while the bike was running. For example ... if you had fuel burning in the pipe after shutting down; the bike would most likely be running like complete crap to begin with because the thing would have to be running pretty wickedly rich to accumulate that much fuel in exhaust in the first place.

this happens alot with stock exhaust systems due to the cat and all. sounds like it is just getting to hot and when it starts to cool down the metal starts to contract. i noticed this on my ducati and EX500 right around the exhaust clamp area. but you did say your boyfriend went down on it and if it was on the exhaust side you might want to check the exhaust system from the header back for any damage that may cause leaks.
