So...
I'm quite obviously between bikes right now - but that never stops me from planning on my next one...

So that said --

Do you look at insurance rates BEFORE you pick your bike?

Because right now I have my top 5 bikes narrowed down - and its amazing the cost differences in insurance.

I can get a brand new Aprilia RSV-R factory for like $650/yr for insurance...

But a damn 750 Gixxer would cost me over $1000/yr.

Does that seem right to you?

A 1000cc kick ass vtwin --- almost $400 less than a 750 inline 4?

Is it just the Gixxer name that kills the rates into insane numbers?

I suspect so anyway.

I would agree, they profile sportbikes unfairly. My Ninja ins is almost double the Harley's ins. And you could buy 3 Ninja's for what that HD cost.

I pay 680 evry year full coverage on my 1000 rr.
Honestly honda is always my first choice, but style piant and comfort though mine aint great on comfrot but can change the bars and seat to make it better. Price also is a factor, which lead me to getting mine early.

I only pay $20 month for full coverage on my 2007 R1.

State Farm does not care what the bike is. They only go by cc.

I should also point out that I have 4 cars, 2 bikes and a house insured with them, I'm 36 with a clean record. So all of that helps.

Price, dealer availbility, and insurance cost, as well as look and feel are what I go by.

the biggest differance in what you were looking at is I4 to V twin.

for me...
05 SV650S (current bike) $600/yr full coverage
07 GSXR750 $2200/yr
07 GSXR1000 $3100/yr

All the same coverage, and granted, my record is dirty, and those quotes were before I turned 25...

I pay $636/year for my '05 R1 through state farm. They had the best rates of anyone when I checked on it.

State Farm for bike insurance = :fans:

Like Cole I have my house, bikes and cars through them. The RC is just a few bucks cheaper than my gixxer. If the difference isn't much then it shouldnt matter but when I first got the gixxer progressive, geico, and every other ins company wanted between $3-4,800K to insure - if I wouldn't have found SF for $540/6 months for the 1K there was no way I would have bought the bike. But then again I'm po so insurance rates were a factor for me.

Whatcha looking to get?

I like mine. Yeah it's sport-touring but it'll cut your insurance rates by at least half and you still have an incredible amount of power! That and you can ride 5 or 6oo miles with out it killing your arms, back, or the rest of you.

I love that bike, my first ride was yours but the red & black. Never let me down and I rode the shit out of it. I cried when I sent her to bike heaven in my wreck :(

I'm an impulse buyer. I tend to fall in love with something & buy, then ask questions later. :fool:

However, if I was trying to decide between a few different models, I'd break it down to pros and cons of each, and cost of insurance would be high on that list.

I might take insurance cost into account if I had a poor record and high rates to begin with, but I don't. I also have State Farm, with multiple vehicles and lines. So it's goes by cc but it's minimal difference between makes and models.

Seriously, if I had to make my choice of what type of bike I could buy based on a $3-400/year insurance premium difference, I don't think I'd buy a bike at all. I think I'd put the money into the bank to pay some bills or something.

I have statefarm too. I pay about 75 a month but I have a million dollar policy. I figure if I go out on the Busa, I am probably going out in a blaze of glory.

When I was shopping for rates, some companies told me that they insure bikes but not busas.

Damn Racist, lol

Lets just say that State Farm hates me.

They told me flat out that not only would they not insure me, but anyone else who took out a policy (of three of us) if I was caught riding their bike they would cancel the policies for everyone even remotely involved. :-D

That being said... I can't recall the name of the insurance on my 636 but not only would they insure me but it wasn't half bad. The 250, the rd 350 and the 500 triple were all jack squat in comparison as well. I wonder if they realize that the 500 triple is just as much of a menace on the road as my 636.

Always check insurance first. What fun is owning the bike if you can't afford to put it on the road?

That said, every squid and his mother want a GSXR (ZXR, YZF, CBR) so expect to pay premiums for their frequent mishaps.

Not many Aprilias on the road, so not as many accidents = lower insurance.
