View Full Version : How long and how much have you ridden?

Cole

This came up in another thread.

Many people quote "time" and equate it to "experience". (ie: I've been riding for 10 year so I'm and expert now........when the reality may be that in 10 year they have only riden 5 miles total:not_i:)

So I'm curious. What is your total mileage and how long have you been riding? Be honest.

Where do "you" percieve your skill level?

I will start it off. (only fair)

I have been on a bike for about 28 years. Near as I can figure from the bikes that I have owned I have logged "about" 250,000 miles.

I feel fairly competent, but always feel there is more to learn, (or even remember)

Great thread Cole!

I have been riding for 7 years and have about 25,000 miles under my belt. I have done track days and street riding (commute and twisties). I guess I would consider myself average? Not icy hot supa sta rider but I ride smart, have fun and go at my own pace. I'm not the fastest in the pack but I'm not the slowest either. I've gotten knee down, but know my limits as well.

I've been street riding... will be 3 years in march.
Previous experience on ATV's helped me ease into sportbikes.
I've logged just shy of 10,000 miles in that time.

I feel I'm an OK rider... not the fastest, not the slowest.
When I get the opportunity to hit some REAL twisties or the track I have a feeling I'll get learned as here in ND we have a lot of flat and straight.

I've been riding since april of 06 and put 30k miles (hard miles) on my first bike (without a laydown) and bought my 07 gsxr new in june of 07 and it has almost 18k miles on it, with my only ever laydown during a recent track day. I'd say for time to miles ratio I would consider myslef and pretty good rider. ;)

I have somewhere between 10k n 20k on the street, numerous miles on dirt n atv's. I dont know anyone that still cant learn something new. DO know alot that think they know it all after riding 1000 miles.

I say I am a safe n descent rider.

i'm with pippi...been riding a little over 7 years on the street, 4 years on dirt before that and have over 25,000 miles of seat time ranging from dirt, track, street, commuting and twisties.

Which i must add does not mean i'm an expert. Matter of fact doesn't really mean anything at all except that i like to spend time on my bike.

I see no way around this:blink: I have to beat you up on this point since you just equated your "16 years" to being a pro:dntknw:. (Which was the point of the tread, time is not equal to experience).

How much have you riden? Where? (those Florida twisties:dntknw:).

Just help us out with the rest of the details since you are invincible at this point:smilepopcorn: (not saying you don't havae the skillz you claim, just help us out with the rest of it)

Interesting trend!!! We are starting to get replies that are based entirely one "time", not amount of usage, practice, education, environment etc.

Cole

Never said you wern't good. But the whole point of the thread was that people base their skill level off of time and nothing else.

My grandfather drove a car without a crash for nearly 60 years. Was he a skilled driver? I dunno. Could have just been lucky.

Obviously you now believe you know everything about riding and can do no wrong. What are you basing this on? Time? Some laps on a track? What?(not a confrontation, just tell us why for the greater perspective)

hahaha...i have seen this same thread like 100 tymes all over the internets.
They are all just an excuse for blowhards to fluff themselves about their riding experience/skillz, and an opportunity for "Werlds most perfect internets guy's" to lecture others on their lack of said exp/sklz...

so yeah, i was kidding around...thanx 4 living up to muh expectations.

WOW. You are really high on yourself and totally off base on the basis of this thread.

It was brought up in another thread. (begginer bikes). Where new riders were saying "I've ridden for 6 months" and equating that to being experienced and then giving advice based on that.

So based on that I was curious how much time vs. actual miles people were putting in!

Riding for 38 years and no way could I even guess how many miles, although the majority have been on dirt and the track, so the # of mi. in relation to street mi. is not a good comparison.

Cole
11-14-2007, 05:18 PM
There are obvioulsy "other" factors in overall rider skill. (as Bueller brings up different types of miles and different types of riding). Along with other factors. Like were you a natural to riding, etc etc etc etc.

More of an interesting exercise than anything else.

I have ridin on the back since 1997 until I was in a bad wreck and almost died.
I baught my own in 2000. I have had 3 bikes now, 2 fizzers and 600RR. Probably 10,000 +miles a year. I will say I am the best girl rider in Indianapolis and lol better than most of the guys...lol....In August of this year I tamed the dragon which I would say is a very intense road.
I am no expert at all. I dont think anyone can say they are. There are always new bikes and new road. Unless you travel the same place on the same bike for years, you are no expert!

Not entirely true...I attribute my track skills to my street riding expiriences....that, and getting a divorce and not giving a crap if I lived or died for about 4 months....now I'm back to reality and have taken the high speeds to the track and left the wheelies on the streets, where they belong.. ;)

Street riding teaches you to be aware of your surroundings (provided you let it)
Traffic, changing road conditions, changing weather... all contribute to making you a better more aware rider, or dead.

I did a fair amount of dirt riding as a kid (borrowed bikes, never my own and wasn't all Travis Pastrana crazy or anything). Started riding street bikes at 16, again on borrowed bikes, then got my own GSXR750 when I was 18. I've owned 6 other bikes since then, gradually moving up to the latest, a 2004 Hayabusa.

I'd have to do some serious calculations, but in the 20 years I've been riding on the street I'd have to say I'm somewhere around 250k miles. Like the OP, I agree there is ALWAYS something to learn. In jest I'll rib rookie's but the most experienced riders in the world will go down when presented with a deer in the chest at 65mph. Never let your guard down, and never assume you can "outride" the dangers that exist.

Bought my first bike in August of this year, a vintage (nice way of saying old) Kawasaki. It was a nice bike and didnt let me down so I rode the piss out of it - logged just shy of 5K miles on it before I put it away for winter about a week ago.

Last month I bought a 2001 Yamaha V-Star.....have just about 2K miles logged on it and I plan on still riding occasionally thru the winter if there is a break in the weather.

So total just about 7K miles since August of this year.....never rode before so thats my life total. So far so good, no accident or issues.

This Monday it was 74 degrees and sunny, I rode my ass off......Wednesay 25 degree and snowing, crazy.

Got a kawasaki 110 or 125 when I was 8 (29 years ago) rode that into the ground. Got a Katana 600 when I was 18, wrecked the hell out of it. Got scared and dint ride again for a long time. Picked up a bike a few years ago and rode it for 3 months then bought an 03 600RR. Rode it on the street for a couple months then did a trackday at Miller. Got home, stripped it and turned it into a racebike. Been riding nothing but the track ever since. I have no idea on track miles but it's alot. With race weekends, schools and trackdays I did around 30 days at Miller this year with 3 wrecks. I can promise that has not made me a better street rider, it has made me afraid to ride the street. Too many things to hit, too many things to hit me...plus 65 mph seems brutally slow.

Well... lemme throw down my last 18 months of experience.

After not riding a motorcycle since Highschool which was a brand new 1986 VFR750, if that gives you an indication to my age... I bought a 2005 Hayabusa from a friend back in June of 2006. The second day I owned the bike, I installed a fully electronic cruise control. The third day of ownership, I put on my bicycle gel shorts, a t-shirt, Mechanix gloves, Nike shoes and grabbed a camelbak for a 2000 mile trip from Houston to Annapolis, Maryland!!

I rode 700 miles the first day to Crestview Florida along I-10. I'm not sure if that gives you a Bonus to even live while riding on I-10, but I rode the entire distance from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge without touching the bars!

The next day I rode to my Brother's in Alpharetta, Georgia. After a small stay there, I headed up Hwy 19 to Deal's Gap, then to the Blue Ridge Parkway, all 469 miles of it til I reached Skyline Drive. I then took Skyline to I-66 and headed East til reaching I-495 to HWY 50 then to the Academy.

My first day in the twisties after not riding a motorcycle for close to 20 years was an advanced curve. I found myself pushing my limits and those of the bike to the point where I could feel the stock tires getting greasy. At one of the resting points along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the guys I was riding with on that run was wearing full race leathers. I told him he must have been hot as hell! His comment was, "Sweat washes off but Road Rash is forever!" To this day I will never forget that. I felt "naked" for the rest of the day and my remaining trip.

When I got to Annapolis, I found Pete's Cycles and scored a good deal on a set of textile pants & jacket. I no longer felt naked when riding and started finding others who liked to ride. It wasn't too long til I found a bunch of crazy phucs in Glen Burnie who meet up at the McDonald's every night to go ride. They call it the Dugout! Every night and every weekend it was another trip somewhere. I found a bunch of Black DC area riders that would make a run from DC to Fell's Point as a pace just a RCH short of Lightspeed!! I found myself again, going slower than the masses and I had not seen anything less than 120mph on the last run!! Was it safe...? Heck No! But I did learn A LOT about my bike and its capabilities! I learned what it can and cannot do at any speed. All a huge preparation for moving back to Houston where cagers never look or think twice about bikes!! Was what I did up north justifiable...? In my eyes I learned more about the capabilities and limitations of my bike which have paid off in me saving my own arse!

Now some will say you can learn that on a track. Sure... go for it. I do track days and have a membership to a local track so I can ride anytime I want. Its completely different. On the track a rhythm is set and its the same line all the time with few exceptions. Even if there are others on the track, we are all trying for the same line or a variation of such. I have seen several times where "EXPERT" track racers will have a devastating Get-Off only because they did not know how to "Toss & Recover" their bike due to another rider going down in front of them and/or debris in their path. Whereas with a street rider with some great street-smart skills will make their bike deviate out of shape if necessary only to recover and keep going. I see way too many track riders get "comfortable" in the repetitious nature of track racing and forget their street smart capability. It is this reason I continue to ride the roads each week.

So... My experience level. I am a NOOB each new day I start my bike. GOD will throw something NEW to me each time and test my resolve. I will accept his challenge and continue to defy odds to stay clean and clear of rash. So far since June 1st of 2006 I have logged 34,540 miles on my HayaBOOsah and almost 1200 racing miles on my CBR1000RR. This doesn't include hundreds of miles on a girlfriend's ZX14 which was her FIRST Bike!

My dedication to riding is so hardcore... I have quit flying helicopters to accept a new direction in life in the Motorcycle industry.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Total about 50,000 miles more or less on my bikes or loaner bikes on and off over 22 years. I would consider my self an above average rider who is constantly learning.

At 16 years old, I met a girl in Western Mass. who taught me how to ride in the cul de' sac on her father's Classic MotoGuzzi (at least I'm 90% sure it was a Moto Guzzi). I was hooked and found and bought my 1st bike within days of meeting that girl.

A 1978 GPZ550 was my first bike at 16 years old. I hid it from my father for almost 2 years by parking on the side street and locking my helmet under the cover. I had that bike 2 years put about 19,000 miles total on it before it was stolen. I rode in the rain, snow and even freezing rain once which was scary as I slid through a red light in front of the Ritz Carlton. I decided to park it there and take a bus or cab from there. I locked it to a sign post only to return a few days later to a sawed off nub of a sign post. No bike

Since then I have been riding off and on, work and weather dictating my riding time.

1984 GPZ550 - 19,000 miles
1990 ZX6 - 5,996 miles
1986 GPZ550 - 3,000 miles
1989 FJ1100 - 2,000 miles
1997 Buell S1 - 3,000 miles
199x VMAX - 3,000 miles
2000 Sprint RS - 4,000 miles
2003 SS1000DS - 6,000 miles (some of that is track miles)
2007 1098 - 2,250 miles

Well I've been riding since 2002, I started on a little 250 Yamaha, I drove it on country roads for about a year. I took the ABATE class and received my license that very Friday. That was in June of 2003. Then I went to find me a bike, went to a dealer that dealt with several different types of bikes. I went looking for a bike that sit low. I bought a 1100 V-star, I put 17000 miles on that sold it in 2006. Bought a 2006 Ultra Classic H-D, and I now have 22,000 miles on it. We drive our bikes on vacation. We have been west, east, north and some south. I'm Ok on curves, but I know that one day I will be better. I have driven curvy roads, but still scared of them. Need lots more experiece on curvy roads. :derisive:

NOt fair, my insturctor was an old cruiser dude, of course he wouldn't teach us how to do that shyt!

Mine was an old harley guy too. but he was cool and wanted us to know everything we could.
That's why he let us take our own bikes through after the class
me on my SV650S got it all on the second try, missed the figure 8 in the box the first time.
two other guys, one on a vrod, one on a boulevard M109R didn't do so well

the instructor took out his harley full dresser out in the end, and did it with more ease than us on our lil mini cruisers!

When I went to take my test, I had been riding for a long time, and was on my 4th bike, a CBR900. My buddy Ryan went with me and was standing there talking to the next guy in line to take the test. It was raining, which I was used to, and the guy commented that I look amazingly comfortable for a new rider taking a license test. Ryan laughed and said "shit, he's had 3 other bikes, and he's already put 12 thousand miles on this new one" http://racersden.net/forum/images/smilies/rofl.gif

I had about 4K miles under my belt at the time

I got in trouble when I took the msf course. I had let me license expire from Hawaii and they told me I had to take the course again so I rode up there with my club vest and on my busa. I spent the first day showing them how to wheelie and do stoppies on the light ass dual sport bike. That didnt go over well with the instructor so he told me if I did it again, i was out of there. So one more burn out to end the session and he laughed at me and gave me my passing grade. I just couldnt help myself

My gf has a ninja 250, I asked if i could ride that, but they said no.
We were on Kawasaki Eliminator 125's. Little cruisers. Kinda funny that they call a 125 an eliminator. Top end on 'em was about 60 according to the instructor.
We has one 250 Venom as well... looked like the mini me of a VRod.

I started riding Sept 2005 got about 1 month in before we had to store the bikes.
Then in 06 put about 5000 miles on the sv from May to October.

07 had about high six grand numbers on the sv, before I chucked her down the road. Was laid up for about a month n half then the hubby promptly made me go to a dealership and find a bike that I would like.
After sitting on many bikes with a cast on my leg, finally decided on the f4i. It had a little over 2000 miles on it when I got her on June 6th and I promptly put over 5000 miles on it from the second week of July till October.

So, basically 10,000 miles approx over 2 Wisc riding seasons approx 1 yr total.

I'm learning everyday, but ever since the accident I'm way more cautious.

been riding since i was about 11-learned on dirt for bout 3 years. i'm 42 in april! got my first street bike in 83-500 shadow-wrecked 3 times before 84, repaired and rode it till 87. bought first v max in 89-wrecked that one in 91. sold it and bought a car. finally grew up and in 2000 bought a 96 yzf750. then bought the 97 max, then traded the 750 for the aprilia rsv mille, them bought another max, then bought the 02 marauder. have put 3000 on the aprilia, 4000 on the 89 max, 2000 on the marauder, and about 8000 on the 97 max. that would be about 17k on the bikes i currently own and i put 14000 on the 750. i put 2000 miles on the 97 max in 5 days when i took it to the nascar race in bristol tenn!!-and i didnt ride it while i was there. 500 miles from here to carlisle pa.- 8 hours-sleep 4 hours-500 more (carlisle to bristol)-8 hours next morn. 1000 miles in 18 hours on way home only stopping for gas and eats. i would NOT recommend this to anyone. i was ready to sell it and hire a rickshaw to get around lol. i wouldnt consider myself an expert, but i have put myself in alot of unsafe positions in the past and have definetly learned from every mistake i ever made. it doesnt matter how well YOU ride-its how well the others on the road drive that you gotta worry about. last summer my girls boss' son lost his leg when a car pulled out from a side street and hit him in the left side. he's been riding, racing, and stunting for the last 16 years-never been down prior.

On the way to Det it was Interstate the whole time. On the way back I wanted to do the Lake Shore Drive, but we got confused in Gary Ind and decided to get the hell out of there and get back to the Interstate. Then we made it back to Lake Shore Drive and took that all the way to the Wi state line.
We go down to Milw quite a bit, so we tend to take the Interstate there as well, all though I'm gonna try and find a different route that we might be able to take..

Good topic with a valid point. The amount of time since you started riding has little to do with skill & experience. It takes several seasons of frequent riding in many different combinations of weather, traffic & road conditions to really get to the point where you can call yourself "experienced". And even then, there is always more to learn, something that can be improved upon.

I learned to ride a CT70 when I was a child and put maybe a few thousand miles on it all told. But I learned to ride a street bike about 19 years ago or so, and just as a guess, I'd say I've ridden around 100k miles, but it's really hard to know for sure. I have a little over 30k miles on my current bike (bought new 3 years ago), but I never tried to keep track of mileage on my previous bikes.

I've been riding dirt bikes for about 40 years. Street bikes, both cruiser and sport, for about 20 years. I would estimate over 200,000 street miles in that time. I bought my first "sportbike" while I was stationed in Germany and really learned to love the mountains. I moved to Georgia and upgraded to my first GSXR and spent every weekend in the Mountains. I went to my first track day about 15 years ago at Talladega Grad Prix track, I was hooked. SInce then I've moved to Texas and owned 7 or 8 sportbikes and a ridden a lot of Victory cruisers (I was a manager at a Victory shop). My wife and I try to get to North Georgia mountains at least once a year, and the Texas hill country a couple times. I raced with the Texas Mini Grands Prix series here in Texas on a slightly modified Yamaha YSR.

Right now we have a 2007 ZX10R that isn't getting ridden enough. I feel like I'm a pretty competent rider, and I think that riding two up I would consider myself to be very good (helps to have a good pillion).

We are just getting one of my neices and one of my nephews into riding and racing pitbikes. I hope to get them into supermoto racing with TMGP by next year.

Bought my SV new in June 2002. Did like 5000 miles the first 3 years COMBINED., THEN I started LEARNING how to really ride. The bike now has 25,000 miles on it, a few track days, a LOT of fun twisties and long rides. I am JUST starting to feel like I have a clue, and the track days helped TREMENDOUSLY. SOOOO far from being GOOD tho. I guess I am average on the streets, and still a total newbie on the track. BUT GETTING BETTER!!!!

^^I like the paint scheme on your Busa, hadasa. Simple but very cool.

My riding experience: I consider myself still a newb. I rode quads for years but never was on a bike myself until I bought a new Honda Rebel 250 April 06. I rode it to work and put 1100 miles on it. Too many highways out where I live and wanted something bigger, so traded in on an '06 Shadow Spirit 750 in June. Put 7000 miles on it in a year, then couldn't make the payments and brother got her. I've only ridden the Ninja a little bit, just a few hundred miles I think. Mostly weather reasons and I have problems with my hands going numb. I think I might start a new thread about that....hmmm. Anyway, I rode the Shadow fast and cornered hard since I've got autoslalom experience, and after taking off the ghey peg feelers from my Shadow I grinded off half the pegs in corners. Haven't been that brave on the Ninja, even tho it's designed for it.

I'd like to do some schools and track days on the Ninja, since I am far from expert and want to ride safe since I know I will never ride slow.

not near enough that's for damn sure...

I didn't start riding till 04 on a friends SV650... logged about 2000 miles on it...

then moved to AK so didn't get a bike until Jan 06... rode for 2 weeks before I deployed and logged about 1500 miles...

came back and it was already winter... Last year with my 3 weeks before and 2 weeks after my deployment I logged about 3000...

so about 6500 miles... like I said not NEARLY enough... god help me when I get to CO I'll pass that in my first two months riding!

My personal bikes I average around 10,000 a year.

I also teach basic rider safety course so I log some miles there.

Id say im pretty saddle sore.

I have been riding street for about two years, dirt a year longer. I ride to work a couple times a week, I ride any weekend I can and go to the track once a month. I started when I met my husband and sat on the back of his, I hated the back! Its much scarier than it is on the front! LOL So learned in the dirt first, took MSF and now here I am, total addict!

Alilyoyo1
02-25-2008, 11:09 AM
Ha! I have got you all beat....for newest! I took the MSF at Thanksgiving. I have probably only put in 1000 miles. Yesterday rode a couple hundred miles, all day and it was awesome...new experience was riding in the rain. It started out a beautiful day but living in Florida we have those daily afternoon showers only its not suppose to start until May!

My husband said yesterday I may be a better rider than him. I think he means safer or more trained. He learned on his own. When I came back from the course he was taking on the stuff I learned and trying to implement.

I know my limits. I feel like when I got on my bike (2005 gsxr6) I belonged there. I soak up advice like a sponge and can't wait to do track school to learn more advance skills. Of course when other riders find out I'm new they ALLLL have something to add. Isn't it funny. I can't stand the little kids (boys or girls) who brag about their stunts, lane splitting, etc. They make us all look like irresponsible riders. They aren't looking so cool when someone changes lanes in front of them and they become road meat though do they?

SW FL? Where abouts? We should ride sometime!

Way to go! You have already figured out the number killer of motorcycle riders....riding beyond your limits or your bikes limits. You have a better chance of surviving the streets than most if you know that single thing!

Well done.

Ive been riding on the street for about 22yrs. Started out Fl., spent a several years riding the awesome roads in Va. Ive owned and rode as small as a 250 Rebel up to a 1500 Goldwing. Florida has a ton of good riding days every year. Id have to say log around 15k-20k a year. Both pleasure and commute. Always more skillz to learn..but Id have to say I can hold my own.

I have been riding 2 years and in that time have amounted a amazing 13,739 miles, remember i live in Washington so that is only 4 months of time being able to ride per year. I would consider myself at a intermediate skill level right now and would hope to be a expert rider within the next 2 years. I went to track days all last summer and did test and tune drag races, I was actually lapping people on 1000's and 750's i was quite surprised. I have yet to be beaten in a drag race by another 600cc class bike i even beat a Daytona 675. Last year my best time in the 1/4 mile was a 10.07 @ 134 mph and that was before i lowered the bike 2" so i could launch harder and gain a few tenths. This summer i hope to break into the 9's which would be a amazing feat on a 600cc bike.

I'm still a riding baby.... Took the MSF last May, but with all the issues with my bike over the summer, and my busy schedule and two kids to tote around, I managed about 800 miles in the fall before the weather got way too icky. Never had too much time logged on the back of a bike, either - just a few rides summer before last, on the VFR that I ended up buying. I'm getting there, though - I try to challenge myself to something new every few rides out - take a different way to and from work so that I have varying road/traffic/weather conditions constantly. Every time I become comfortable with one challenge, I find another to tackle. :)

I've been riding for 20 years with almost half of that on the street. Since I've been on the street I've never ridden less than 15k a year (tires are a big reminder $$$) and some years I've hit as high as 30k miles (Goldwings rock hardcore). I haven't calculated it in a while but I was over 200,000 miles the last time I checked.

That said, I don't equate distance or time with experience. There are a fecundity of different ways and styles to riding; a surfeit of different experiences to encounter and a real difference between miles in the twisties and miles on the superslab.

You can ride for years and hundreds of thousands of miles yet still be humbled by a new rider who concentrates on form and find better lines.

I have been riding for only 4 years. I know that I am not the best rider in the world, but I can hold my own. There really are not that many girls that ride and not that many girls that can hang with the guys riding. I have always had to prove myself to the guys so I can ride with them. If I was not as good or better than them I couldn't go ride with them. My husband and I wasted to get bikes so bad. I asked him if her would be okay getting 2 bikes instead of having a wedding and a honeymoon. He has the wedding and I got the honeymoon. What guy would say no to that idea?

1861mi on my bike since the end of June '07 when I purchased it. Took & passed the Abate (MSF) BRC in August as well in order to get my license (& keep my insurance w/o worrying). (Getting ready to sign up again & take it with friends this summer.) Most of my miles are commuting in straight lines to & from work, riding around my neighborhood's cul-de-sac, & behind the local strip mall practicing low-speed maneuvering.

I have "owned" a bike for a total almost a year. My ride time has been really limited to every other weekend when the kids go to their dads and I try to hook up with my friends that ride once a week. So total miles maybe 1000 I have not really kept track could be less. I feel I have so much to learn. Every ride is a chance to encounter something new.

Well I started on a 250cc Yamaha, rode it for about a year don't know how many miles I had on it. I took ABATE course received my license the Friday following the course. That July, bought a 1100 V-star, put between 15,000 miles and 20,000 miles in 3 years on it. Then I sold it in 06, bought a 06 H-D Ultra Classic I've owned it for 2 years now and I have over 22,000 miles on it. I'm an OK rider, I've rode from Arizona to Nebraska, to Maine to all around here. Some twisties, lot's of straight road too. I can always learn something new on my bike, especially my limitations. The farthest I have drove in one day is over 400 miles, then my arms fell off. LOL!
