OK, I have a 2007 zx6r. Bought it brand new July 19 this year. Had 2miles on it when I drove out of the dealership. I now have 3400 miles on it. I have done the oil changes at each 1000 mile turnover. I have noticed for a fuel injected bike that I have hesitation and warm up time required that I didn't expect from the fule inj bike. It actually bogs out and dies like an older bike would do if it needed choked. I rode regular up until the cooler weather and have just gotten in a few short rides over the last couple of weeks. Everyhting seemed find all the times I rode. Today we were moving things around in the garage to tuck away the summer items and when I went to start my bike it sounded like one of the lifters was going to come right thru. Worst noise imaginable. made my stomache flip flop.

Now that you have read the book :) Anyone have any suggestions of what they think it might be, I may just take it in to the dealer due to the warranty, just hate to ride it if there is something majorly wrong.

Anyone experience this before or have any advice to offer?

Thanks!

not sure on the sound unless I heard. But even FI bikes have to warmup when its cold. They just dont require choking to start like a carb'd bike. Did you let it run til it got upto operating temp and see if the noise stopped or freaked n shut it off? if the latter, check the engine oil, add if needed. Then fire it up n let it warmup n see if the noise subsides. And since its under warranty def give then a ring, afterall that is why you paid for it :good:

Thanks yes I let it warm up and ran it a while the noise did subside. So will likely get it in to the shop just to double check everything.

This is normal for kawi's. I'm guessing the sound is something like a bunch of nails in a can? Kawi's tolerances are a little "looser" than some and are known for this. Let the bike warm up for at least 2-3 minutes before you ride it. This lets oil circulated to the upper head. Both my 6 and 10 sound like crap until they get some heat in them. Once their up to operating temp their good.

If something was really wrong that motor would be siezed up by now. Valve lash isn't even recommended to be checked until 12K.

So what I'm trying to say is this is normal. Also I don't know what oil your using but my Kawi's dig AMS synthetic 10-40 for street or Mobil 15-50 for track days

Well sh*! lol I just bought 10-50 today and I don't do track :) I feared the worst hearing that rocker arm beating away. I was seeing $$$ signs knowing a valve adjustment wouldn't be covered under the warranty.

Thanks!

What oil were you running before? I take it you picked up Mobil 10-50 (red cap?) as it doesn't have any friction modifiers that would reek havoc with your slipper clutch?

Had 10-40 in it before. It is lucas oil brand, what they carry at the shop where I bought the bike. It's actually a blue cap. So probably shouldn't run that?

If its mobil the ONLY oil you can use is the 10-50 with the red cap. Look on the back and you'll see a label stating if it has friction modifiers or not.

Not to alarm you but it could also be a intake valve retainer going

Well that would really suck. jeez, ok so I will def take your advice read up on the oil and exchange it. I'm thinking while it's well under warranty and the riding season is over I should wait to change the oil and take that baby in where I bought it for a diagnosing

oh brother... all the opinions,

if you havent already, start running synthetic oil, castrol r4 is really good, and fairly priced, 7.99 per qt for full synthetic...

you are changing your oil enough, every 1k wow, thats a maintence sound mind!

the noise could be a sticky valve, when metal sits in the cold, it contracts, when its warm it expands, remember when you were a kid and you did it with the mayo jar or jelly jar... same thing with your engine, a bike that new, and with so few miles I would have to guess the valves are just seating were they are finally gonna be, I wouldnt really worry about it blowing up on the way to the dealer, anything internally in the engine should be covered under the warranty, so take it to em and let em look!

good luck

oh, by the way, as long as the oil said motorcycle oil on it you cant hardly go wrong as long as you keep oil in the bike, some oils are better some oils arent quite "as good" as a hole oil is oil, and as long as its in the bike its working and doing what it is supposed to do...

synthetic oil is better over the long life of your engine and well worth the extra dollar or 2 .... it also give you a slight little bit more hp over non synthetic

Thanks, will be outta town next week. So I'm taking it in when I get back. Our garage is a big 40X60 detached and not heated unless we are running heat while working in there so the cold def factors in.

Sorry, but "oil is just oil" isn't true. Talk to racer's or track day riders and you'll hear a definate preference as to what brand they like. I wouldn't use Castrol in my lawn mower much less my bike. This is probably the dumbest statement I've heard on this board. Do some research or check out the zx6rr.net forums for what Kawi riders prefer.

Its not a valve, you bike is well past the break-in period. If it was you'd be digging out parts in your oil pan.

KOAS keep your shitty advise coming :ok:

I've been trying to do everything by the book to keep my warranty in good standing so been getting the oil from the dealership where I bought the bike.

No castrol for the NINJA :smile2:

Your warrenty isn't tied to the dealership. As long as you follow your owner's manual for maintenance intervals and oil weight your fine. Just because a dealer doesn't carry a brand of oil doesn't mean it would void your warrenty.

Are you using synthetic? If not do some research but you'll see AMS, Motul, KawiChem, & Silkoline are Kawi favorites. IMHO use a factory filter.

I have over 7K on each of my Kawi's and have never had a problem.

I will get back into the manual tonight and buff up on knowing what to get so they don't talk me into just what they carry. We have an 01 zx6r and that thing runs so smooth and sounds great at 6k. So this hasn't scarred my faith in Kawi at all.

Are you running synthetic? If not go to a synthetic 10-50 (light weight for the colder months). If your running regular oil in 10-40 weight, the oil is thicker and is starving your motor of lubrication at start up.

Sorry for the jack...

a bike sitting for a long time and especially in cold weather the oil needs time to warm up and circulate through the motor. my kawi does the same thing when i haven't ridden it in a while. at first start up it makes a clatter noise in the valve area but after a few minutes of running and warming up it starts to go away. i run either castrol r4 or redline synthetic in all my bikes. and if the bike is still under warranty might as well take it in and have them look at it.

good info but if all of that fails, just put a Suzuki sticker on it and it should run fine. Probably run faster too,lol

Love you long time
